In The Singer (Quand j’etais chanteur), Gerard Depardieu plays Alain Moreau – a faded, middle-aged crooner who makes his living singing sentimental favourites in local clubs and dance halls. A hardened, honest professional, he knows his style seems dated, but only because he’s lasted the course. Whilst performing one night, Alain spots a beautiful young blonde, Marion (Cecile de France) and he is smitten.

But the fragile Marion has a complicated past. Escaping from a troubled relationship and struggling to connect with her son, Marion is cautiously unwilling to fall too easily for Alain’s evidently practised charms.

It is with quiet persistence and a self-deprecating attitude that Alain manages to capture Marion’s imagination. What follows is a beautifully nuanced portrait of two lost souls reaching out for something that neither fully comprehends, proving that love can be found in the most unexpected places.

In one of the greatest performances of his career, Depardieu finds a rare chemistry with rising star, Cecile de France, which is intoxicating to watch. The performances alone make it easy to see why The Singer was so widely feted at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.
