The Invasion is a nightmarish journey into a world where the only way to stay alive is to stay awake. The mysterious crash of the space shuttle leads to the terrifying discovery that there is something alien within the wreckage. Those who come in contact with it are changing in ominous and inexplicable ways. Soon, Washington DC psychiatrist, Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman) and her colleague, Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig) learn the shocking truth about the growing extra-terrestrial epidemic: it attacks its victims while they sleep, leaving them physically unchanged but strangely unfeeling and inhuman. As the infection spreads, more and more people are altered and it becomes impossible to know who can be trusted. Now Carol’s only hope is to stay awake long enough to find her young son, who may hold the key to stopping the devastating invasion.

The Invasion is the fourth film adaptation of the Jack Finney novel, Body Snatchers, although this version could very well be the loosest yet. First filmed in 1956 as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and seen as a metaphor for the communist paranoia of America’s McCarthy era, it is one of the cinema’s science fiction landmarks. Equally terrifying is the 1978 remake that carried the same title and starred Donald Sutherland, whose last moment on screen is a chiller. Less well known and not as effective was a 1993 adaptation that used the novel’s original, shorter title, Body Snatchers and confined the action to a military base.

The new film – previously known as The Visiting – is the first English language movie for Oliver Hirschbiegel, the German director of the Oscar-nominated film, Downfall. Joining Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig in the cast is Veronica Cartwright who had a major role in the 1978 version.

i thought this movie was pretty good. the acting was solid, the story line wasnt too bad, it was action packed and i enjoyed it. First reviewer is totally right. This INVASION is a mess, the only thing it's gonna snatch is your money, if you get sucked in to see it. Oliver's DOWNFALL was genius, this one is the complete opposite, it's this year's WICKER MAN (the CAGE one), and that's BAD! Nicole throws a kid (for bad child acting), and doesn't even apologize! Craig acts like an idiot, then a zombie (no stretch there, and that's actually his best bit in this catastrophe). All the gore/vomit is cgi based (what little of that there is) and there are no pods and don't even think about a dog with a human head in this one (there is a shot of a poodle for no reason though). NO SCARES, NO SUSPENSE...it's very slow and then it has the nerve to copy 28 DAYS/WEEKS LATER (too little, too late) in the reshoot at the end! Blame Joel Silver for retooling this to make everything so obvious and over explained and the happy ending?! Watch the 1978 version instead (or again to cleanse your mind of this stench) to see this story done brilliantly right. I went to a preview screening on Monday night. It was supposed to open in Oz yesterday, but it's bombed so badly in the USA, it's release elsewhere has been delayed -- presumably to retool it again or to figure out a better way to market it! It was boring and borderline unwatchable. The script changes the best/coolest/creepiest ideas of the original movies i.e. don't expect pods/pod people.
