It is said that all is fair in love and war. Perhaps. Political intrigue, bold admissions of love, guilt-ridden betrayal, unbridled passion, and calculated vengeance conspire in a love triangle that pits three people between their allegiance for country, love of family, and passions for each other. Set in the splendor of ancient Egypt, and one of Opera’s most revered classics, La Scala AIDA, promises to deliver a compelling drama highlighted by opulent theatrical pageantry and extraordinary singing. Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt commissioned Verdi to write the opera for performance in January 1871, paying him 150,000 francs, but the premiere was delayed because of the Franco-Prussian War. AIDA was first performed at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo under the baton of Giovanni Bottesini and met with great acclaim when it opened on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1871. It continues to be a staple of the standard operatic repertoire 135 years later on stage in the splendor of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala.
