To Gemm@ - I dont think there is a set of characteristics that someone "requires" to be a good person, however I do beleive that anyone who buys a handbag or shoes to cheer themselves up is selfish - someone else may feel better about themselves if they worked at a soup kitchen or gave their old bag to charity. Its the difference in how they derive self esteem: one person feels good about themselves because they are helping others, and the other feels good because they have the top autumn fashion. To Samual: I saw it because I work at the movies - I didnt have to, but I found it really fascinating because of the reasons i discussed. I didnt like it, but was interested because some woman seem to think it is related to woman nowdays - which i found truly disturbing.To Charmw: I am so glad you dont speak for all woman - your comment is hopefully not too reflective of your values. Id say it is very fake life that fake people look at as desirable - not real. There are obviously plenty of people like that (possibly you?), but it is a fake life. It really is very consumeristic, and none of the girls are particularly good examples of women who have it together, but then again, I think that's part of its charm: the women are messed up, like most of the world out there is. You're right though, they are superficial and immature a lot of the time. I like Sex and the City, but I did find your comment very interesting. I would just like to make one point: does a woman have to be "selfless"? Yes, intelligent is good. Yes, compassionate is good. Maybe it is harsh - but its is not untrue. 50 year old woman dressing up for each other and putting on fashion shows in their bedroom, self indulgent materialistic consumerism and over indulgence in excessive lifestyles, snobbish, elitist views (all girls are rude to waiters and working class people in the film), superficial world views and value systems...these woman are all single for a reason, and they appeal to similarly repulsive people who share this over-indulgent elitist superficial world view. Not only men hate this film - PEOPLE who resent the western world wasting money on material consumerisms and lifestyles dont like this film, and it represents the attitudes that many of the worlds "have nots" are hoping the wealthy nations discourage. But maybe I'm wrong - maybe shoes are really important, maybe being 50 years old, dressing like a spoilt rich teenager, drinking to excess and making sad baby faces to get your man to do what you want are the traits or a sophisticated, intelligent, compassionate, selfless woman. What would woman say if a man talked about his fiance to his friends by calling her miss big? We would be called chauvinists - and rightly so. Should I look at any character in the film and think they are a good role model to anyone? I dont think so, and that is all the critism is saying. Then again, if people stop reading too much into it, they should see it as much about feminism as Hulk is about masculinity. this movie so so over-rated. i LOVED the series and this film really let me down. i thought it was hardly funny and missed a lot of the main things that SATC used to be about (like carrie's column etc). i think the way the characters acted and what they did was unrealistic and inconsistant with the personalities that the show established (except for char and sam). it made me like the other characters less and now i'll get an iky feeling when watching the last episode of the series instead of the happy fuzzy feeling i used to love. the whole thing should have been done a lot better. fashion is taking over substance because of all the hype. sad. hysteria_baby on 7/06/2008 at 12:35:52 AM
